Tories seek to further erode local democracy in restrictions on Councils’ powers. Ministers are preparing new procurement guidelines which could stop local authorities refusing to trade with, or include in their pension fund portfolios, companies involved in the arms trade, fossil fuels, tobacco products and Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Birmingham Green campaigner welcomes action from Tesco in Stirchley

Birmingham Green Party campaigner for Bournville Ian Jamieson has responded to the news that the long-delayed Tesco development in Stirchley will begin in early 2016. He expressed concerns about the resulting increase in traffic in Stirchley and the green credentials of the build but also relief that the uncertainty over use of the site may be coming to an end.

Whilst more than 190 nations are gathered in Paris at the COP21 Climate conference to thrash out a deal on future climate targets, continuing to entertain the possibility of a third runway at Heathrow seems ironic and ultimately foolish.
